Their story

Aqará is an agave distillate from the Callejón de Huaylas, the valley in Peru's Áncash region that runs between the Cordillera Negra and the Cordillera Blanca. Founder Marco Suárez named it after the town of Caraz, whose name he traces to a Quechua word meaning "place of agaves."

The range includes a Plateado, a Reposado and several more expressive bottlings such as Rosa Huandoy, Agreste and Sortilegio. The spirits have gathered a long list of medals at the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition and the San Francisco Spirits Competition, including a double gold and Best of Class for the Reposado in 2021.

How it's made

Aqará is made by hand from agave hearts grown on the slopes of the two Andean ranges around Caraz. The finished spirit carries aromas of mountain herbs and shrubs alongside ripe fruit, and the Reposado spends time resting before bottling.

Why we carry them

Most agave spirits we stock come from Mexico, so this one from the Peruvian Andes is a real change of scene. Pour it next to a mezcal and compare the herbal notes.
