Their story

Averna comes from Caltanissetta, in the hills of central Sicily. In 1859 the prior of the local Abbey of Santo Spirito gave Salvatore Averna, a draper and justice of the peace who had supported the monks, the recipe for their herbal infusion. Salvatore began producing it in 1868.

The Averna family built the business over three generations and took it public in 1958. Campari Group bought the company in 2014, and in 2026 Campari agreed to sell the Averna brand to Illva Saronno, the Italian group behind Disaronno.

How it's made

Herbs, roots, citrus peels and pomegranate are crushed and steeped in neutral alcohol, along with essential oils from bitter orange and lemon. Caramel is added after maceration, and the producer says the recipe has stayed the same since 1868.

Why we carry them

Averna is the amaro we suggest to anyone new to the category, rounded and gently bitter. Try it neat after dinner or over ice with an orange twist.
