Their story

Buffalo Trace stands on the banks of the Kentucky River in Frankfort, where records show distilling began in the late 1700s. The site changed hands and names over the years: Edmund H. Taylor Jr. called it the O.F.C. Distillery in 1870, and George T. Stagg bought it a few years later.

The distillery was allowed to keep working during Prohibition, making whiskey for medicinal use. The Sazerac Company bought it in 1992 and renamed it Buffalo Trace in 1999, after an old buffalo crossing on the river. It became a National Historic Landmark in 2013.

Today it makes Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, E.H. Taylor, Weller, and Sazerac Rye, and produces Pappy Van Winkle with the Van Winkle family.

How it's made

Bourbon and rye are distilled on site in Frankfort and aged in new charred oak barrels, as American straight whiskey requires. The distillery also bottles single-barrel bourbons such as Blanton's and Elmer T. Lee with partner Age International.

Why we carry them

We think Buffalo Trace bourbon is one of the best values in Kentucky whiskey. It is a good everyday pour and a smart starting point for the distillery's wider range.
