Their story

Bunnahabhain sits on a quiet bay near Port Askaig on the northeast coast of Islay. It was built in 1881 by the Islay Distillery Company and joined Highland Distilleries a few years later.

The distillery closed in 1981 and reopened in 1984 as demand returned. Burn Stewart bought it in 2003, Burn Stewart merged into South Africa's Distell in 2014, and Distell is now part of Heineken.

How it's made

Spirit is made in two large wash stills and two spirit stills, with capacity of about 3.5 million liters a year. Most of the range is milder than typical Islay malts, alongside a few peated releases such as Toiteach A Dha.

Why we carry them

We point people to Bunnahabhain when they want Islay character without heavy smoke. The 12 Year Old is a great sipping whisky.
