Their story

Campari began in 1860 in Milan, where Gaspare Campari created the bright red bitter that still carries his name. He ran a bar near the Duomo and made his own bitters and liqueurs on site. His son Davide later narrowed the range to focus on Campari and took it abroad, and a production plant in Sesto San Giovanni opened in 1904.

The Garavoglia family gained control in the 1970s, and the company has grown through acquisitions since listing on the Italian stock exchange in 2001. Today Campari Group's portfolio includes Aperol, Wild Turkey, Appleton Estate, Grand Marnier, Espolón and Courvoisier.

How it's made

Campari bitter is an infusion of herbs, fruit and other botanicals in alcohol and water, made to Gaspare Campari's original recipe, which the company keeps secret. Production moved from the historic Sesto San Giovanni plant to Novi Ligure in 2005.

Why we carry them

We keep Campari and Aperol stocked for spritz and Negroni season, which in San Francisco is most of the year. Few bottles do more work behind a home bar.
