Their story
Canaan Palestine, also known as Canaan Fair Trade, was founded in 2004 by Nasser Abufarha, a Palestinian-American, in Jenin in the northern West Bank. In 2008 the company began building its processing facility on land near the village of Burqin.
Canaan works with more than 1,700 West Bank farmers organized in informal cooperatives and represented by the Palestine Fair Trade Association. Their olive oil, grains and nuts reach shelves under organic and fair trade terms.
How it's made
The olive oil and other products come from small farms in the West Bank, much of it certified organic and fair trade. Alongside oil, Canaan makes za'atar, maftoul, freekeh, almonds and carob syrup, sourced from the same farming network and processed at its Burqin facility.
Why we carry them
We reach for Canaan's olive oil and za'atar when we want everyday pantry staples with a clear line back to the farmers. The za'atar on warm bread with oil is hard to beat.
