Their story

Candela started with a vacation. In 2014 Miami's Alejandro Russo tried mamajuana in Punta Cana, the Dominican drink of rum steeped with barks, herbs and spices, and found that nobody was selling a commercial version. He founded Candela Mamajuana in 2016.

The brand reached U.S. shelves in 2018 and the Dominican Republic a year later. It is based in Miami with production at its own distillery in the Dominican Republic.

How it's made

Candela's rum is distilled from fresh sugarcane juice, and the leftover cane pulp is turned into fuel for the distillery. The rum is infused with locally sourced herbs and spices, then aged at least a year in bourbon casks. Most of the water used is collected rainwater.

Why we carry them

We like Candela as an easy introduction to mamajuana. It sips well over ice and adds spice to a rum punch.
