Their story

Cardhu began as a farm distillery near Archiestown in Speyside, started by John Cumming, a former whisky smuggler, and his wife Helen. Helen ran much of the operation, selling whisky from the farmhouse window and, so the story goes, dusting herself with flour to pass off the smell as baking.

Her daughter-in-law Elizabeth Cumming rebuilt the distillery in 1885 and sold it to Johnnie Walker in 1893, on the condition that the family keep running it day to day. Today Cardhu is owned by Diageo and remains a key malt in Johnnie Walker blends.

How it's made

Cardhu draws spring water from the Mannoch Hills, supplemented by the local Lyne Burn since an expansion in 1970. It runs six copper pot stills, and the unpeated malt is known for a light, sweet and approachable Speyside style.
