Their story
Cataldo Calabretta's family has grown grapes around Cirò, on Calabria's Ionian coast, for more than four generations and has bottled wine since the 1970s. Cataldo studied winemaking in Milan and worked at other estates before coming home to renovate the family cellar.
His first wine under his own approach, a Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore, came out in 2012. He farms about 14 hectares in small hillside plots, mostly Gaglioppo, the local red grape, with some Alicante, Ansonica, Malvasia and Greco Bianco.
How it's made
The vineyards are farmed organically, including old bush-trained vines that must be worked by hand, with green manure crops to keep the clay-limestone soil healthy. Wines ferment with native yeast in stainless steel and age in cement rather than wood.

Ciro Rosso Classico Superiore (750ML)
$28.00
It is made with 100% Gaglioppo Alberello, from a vineyard in the hills. A wine that surprises for its elegance despite coming from a warm climate; the rich presence of tannins allow these wines to.

Why we carry them
Calabretta's Cirò is a great reason to explore Southern Italy beyond the usual names. It is lively and savory, and we love it with pizza or grilled sausages.
