Their story
Château La Coustarelle sits in the village of Prayssac in the Lot, right next to the well-known Clos de Gamot. Paul Cassot settled here as a farmer in 1870, and his grandson Pierre took over in 1947 and gave the property the Coustarelle name.
Michel Cassot and his wife Nadine took the reins in 1980, and in 1992 they stopped selling to the local co-op and began bottling their own wine. Their daughter Caroline, the fifth generation, has led the vineyard and cellar since 2002.
What began as a 3.5-hectare parcel has grown to about 53 hectares on gentle south-facing slopes.
How it's made
Malbec leads, with Merlot and a few hectares of Tannat, planted mostly on high terraces of clay, gravel and sand. The family farms with a reasoned approach, keeping grass in every third row. Grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel, then aged in steel, demi-muids or older oak, with some wines bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Why we carry them
We like Coustarelle for showing what Malbec tastes like in its French home: darker, firmer and great with a steak or cassoulet.
