Their story
Château Peybonhomme-les-Tours is in Cars, near Blaye on Bordeaux's northern right bank, marked by a 17th-century tower. The Hubert family has owned it since 1895. Siblings Rachel and Guillaume Hubert run it now, Rachel after studying pharmacy and Guillaume after studying ecology.
After a storm in December 1999, their parents, Jean-Luc and Catherine Hubert, moved the vineyards to organic and then biodynamic farming. The estate was certified biodynamic in 2000, one of the first in Bordeaux.
How it's made
About 50 hectares are farmed biodynamically. Wines ferment with native yeast in temperature-controlled concrete vats, are not fined, and use little sulfur. Bottling is timed to the biodynamic calendar.
Why we carry them
We like Peybonhomme as proof that Bordeaux can be lively, honest and good value. It is a great red for everyday dinners.
