Their story

Christopher Ranch is a family farm in Gilroy, the town south of San Jose that calls itself the garlic capital of the world. It was started in 1956 by Don Christopher, a third-generation farmer, on 10 acres bought with a loan from his father.

Garlic became the farm's focus, and the ranch grew fast. By the 1980s it was harvesting 10 million pounds a year, and by the end of that decade around 100 million pounds, making it the leading fresh garlic producer in the United States.

Don also helped start the Gilroy Garlic Festival and gave generously to local schools and causes. He worked at the ranch full time until 2020 and died in 2022.

How it's made

Christopher Ranch grows its garlic in and around Gilroy, in California's Santa Clara Valley. The farm has held steady at around 100 million pounds a year since the late 1980s, harvesting and packing garlic for fresh sale.

Why we carry them

We like having California-grown garlic from just down the road on our shelves. It is a pantry basic worth buying from a farm with this much history.
