Their story
Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona sits near the village of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, on the southeastern side of Montalcino in Tuscany. The estate is run by Paolo and Lucia Bianchini, and Paolo's children, Alex and Ester, now work alongside them.
The property dates back to the 17th century and takes its name from the Ciacci family and the marriage of Elda Ciacci to Count Alberto Piccolomini d'Aragona. When Countess Elda died in 1985 without an heir, she left the estate to Giuseppe Bianchini and his family. Giuseppe died in 2004, and his children carried it forward.
Today the estate has about 55 hectares of vines and 40 hectares of olive trees.
How it's made
The best-known wines come from Pianrosso, a southeast-facing vineyard of about 12 hectares at 240 to 360 meters. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled steel and glass-lined concrete in an underground winery near Castelnuovo dell'Abate, and the Brunello ages 24 to 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks.
Our featured pick
Toscana Rosso (750ML)
$24.00
A gentle Sangiovese based blend with soft red fruits, herbal notes and a touch of spice. As with most Italian reds, fresh acidity makes it a great match for tomato based pasta dishes.

Why we carry them
We like this estate for classic, age-worthy Brunello with a family story behind it. The Pianrosso bottling is a fine choice for a special dinner.
