Their story
Cleto Chiarli is a family-owned winery in Emilia-Romagna, named for the man who started it in 1860. It is often described as the region's first official wine company, and it is still run by the Chiarli family, now in its fifth generation.
When Lambrusco faded from many markets in the late 1990s, the family responded by going back to a drier, fresher, more traditional style, moving away from the sweet, mass-made bottles that had shaped the wine's reputation.
Today the winery makes single-variety Lambruscos from Sorbara and Grasparossa, along with bottlings like the Centenario.
How it's made
The family works with the region's own Lambrusco grapes, mainly Sorbara and Grasparossa, and makes single-varietal wines from each. The sparkle comes from a single fermentation of the grape must, and the house style leans dry, fresh and expressive.
Why we carry them
We like Chiarli for showing how good Lambrusco can be. A chilled bottle with salumi and Parmigiano is hard to beat.
