Their story
Giulio Cocchi set up shop in Asti, in Piedmont, in 1891, making still, sparkling and aromatized wines. His recipes for aperitivo wines became fixtures of the region's cafe culture.
Since 1978 the company has been run by the Bava family, Piedmont winemakers who kept the old Cocchi recipes in production. Roberto Bava helped lead the effort that won legal recognition for Vermouth di Torino as a protected designation in 2017.
Today the lineup includes Cocchi Americano, Vermouth di Torino, Barolo Chinato, Cocchi Rosa and Dopoteatro Vermouth Amaro, along with sparkling wines and grappa.
How it's made
Cocchi builds its aperitifs from macerated botanicals rather than distilled ones, extracting a few at a time and blending those extracts across several products. Americano leans on gentian, cinchona, bitter orange and wormwood, while the Barolo Chinato starts with Barolo wine and adds cinchona, rhubarb, gentian and cardamom.
Why we carry them
Cocchi Americano over ice with soda and an orange twist is one of our go-to aperitivos. For an after-dinner pour, the Barolo Chinato is worth seeking out.
