Their story
Colleleva is the project of Stefano Antonucci, a former banker who left a desk job for the vineyards around his hometown of Barbara, in Le Marche on Italy's Adriatic side. In the late 1980s he took over the cooperative winery his father had run.
For about three decades he has worked to bring Marche wines to more drinkers at fair prices. The name is said to mean roughly "where the hills rise," a nod to the vineyards in the Apennine foothills, halfway between the mountains and the sea.
How it's made
The vineyards face east and catch cooling breezes off the Adriatic. The white is Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, and the red Rosso Piceno blends Montepulciano and Sangiovese, fermented and aged in stainless steel to keep the fruit fresh.
Why we carry them
Colleleva is the kind of everyday Italian wine we love to recommend for a weeknight dinner. The Verdicchio is crisp and easy with seafood.
