Their story

Conecuh Ridge Distillery makes Clyde May's whiskey, named for a World War II veteran who made moonshine in Bullock County, Alabama, from the 1950s into the 1980s. After Clyde died in 1990, his son Kenny May brought the whiskey to market legally, with the first bottles arriving in 2001. In 2004 Alabama named it the official state spirit.

The brand changed hands several times, and an investment group under the Conecuh Ridge Distillery name recapitalized it in 2014. For years it was made under contract in Kentucky, but the company has since opened a tasting room and bottling plant in Troy, Alabama, about 20 miles from where Clyde made his whiskey, with distilling there planned to follow.

How it's made

Clyde May added oven-dried apples to his barrels, which gave the whiskey notes of green apple and cinnamon, and the brand calls this the Alabama Style. Early batches were made in Bardstown, Kentucky, with Alabama spring water and aged in charred oak, typically for five to six years.

Why we carry them

Clyde May's is a whiskey with a story to match what is in the glass. The apple notes make it an easy sipper for bourbon newcomers.
