Their story

Corte Vetusto is the work of founder David Shepherd and maestro mezcalero Juan Carlos Gonzalez Diaz, a fourth-generation Zapotec mezcal maker in Oaxaca. Juan Carlos studied architecture before returning to the family craft, learning from his father and from maestros in other villages.

The brand has been on the market since around 2016. Its range includes an Espadin, a Tobala and limited Ensamble releases that change from batch to batch, as mezcal traditionally did.

How it's made

Mature agave is cut by hand and roasted for several days in earthen pit ovens lined with volcanic rock and fired with mesquite. The cooked hearts are crushed with a horse-drawn stone tahona and fermented in open wooden vats with wild yeast. Espadin is distilled twice in copper, while the Tobala and Ensambles also use clay pot stills, with spring water from the mountains near Mitla.

Why we carry them

We like Corte Vetusto for showing how traditional methods shape flavor. Taste the Espadin and Tobala side by side.
