Their story
Freire Lobo is the family label of Elisa Freire Lobo, who comes from a long line of grape growers in Portugal's Dão region. She trained in Bairrada and the Douro in the late 1990s, then returned home and became the first woman winemaker to set up in the Dão.
Along the way she worked alongside many of the region's respected winemakers. In 2010 she took over her family's vineyards and began bottling under the family name.
Vigno is her approachable red, a blend of the grapes the Dão is known for.
How it's made
The 15-hectare estate is farmed organically, with Bordaleira sheep grazing and fertilizing the vines and cover crops planted to build up the granitic soils. Only traditional Portuguese varieties are grown, and Vigno Tinto blends Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Jaen and Tinta Roriz.
Why we carry them
We like Vigno for anyone curious about Portuguese reds, with fresh fruit and a silky texture that work well with grilled meats or a weeknight stew.
