Their story

Deanston sits on the banks of the River Teith near Doune, in the southern Highlands. The building started life in 1785 as the Adelphi cotton mill, designed by Richard Arkwright for the Buchanan brothers, and it spun cotton for nearly two centuries.

When the mill closed in 1965 it was converted into a distillery, which opened in 1966, a conversion unlike any other in Scotland. Deanston went quiet in 1982 and was revived by Burn Stewart Distillers in 1990. The distillery marked its 60th anniversary in 2026.

How it's made

The River Teith drives a water turbine that supplies all of the distillery's electricity. Malted barley is milled and mashed in a traditional open-topped mash tun, fermented in steel washbacks and distilled in two pairs of stills. The spirit matures in the mill's old weaving shed, now a bonded warehouse.

Why we carry them

Deanston is a friendly, honeyed Highland malt with a great backstory, and a good bottle for anyone moving beyond the big names. We like telling the cotton mill story when we pour it.
