Their story

Derrumbes is a small, independently owned mezcal brand from Jalisco. One of its founders, Esteban Morales, is a former chef from Guadalajara who began selling mezcal there in 2008. In 2012, Sergio Mendoza, the founder of Don Fulano Tequila, and a family partner called Morales about starting a mezcal brand together.

They began with a very small budget and no outside investors, reinvesting everything back into the business. Today Derrumbes offers seven expressions, each from a different Mexican state, including Durango and Michoacán.

How it's made

Each expression comes from a single independent mezcalero in its state, and Derrumbes bottles what they make. Some are made from one agave species and others blend several. The team puts the producer's own approach first, and part of its aim is to ease pressure on Oaxaca's agave by giving other regions a bigger role.

We haven't had any profits in the past 10 years; we reinvest everything.
Esteban Morales, co-founder, to InsideHook (2022)

Why we carry them

Derrumbes is our favorite way to show people that mezcal is bigger than Oaxaca. Try the Durango and Michoacán bottlings next to each other.
