Distillerias Xoriguer

Wood-fired Mahón gin made by the Pons family on Menorca.

Mahón, Menorca

Their story

Gin came to Menorca in the 1700s, when the British Navy was stationed in the deep harbor at Mahón and sailors wanted the spirit they knew from home. Local distillers began making it, and the island developed its own style.

Xoriguer is run by the Pons family, whose windmill, pictured on the label, has been in the family since the 18th century. After a fire destroyed the original distillery, Miguel Pons rebuilt it in 1910 on the same foundations, and the gin is still made in Mahón.

How it's made

Xoriguer starts with a grape spirit made from Xarel-lo and Parellada grapes rather than grain. Juniper from the Pyrenees is aged in open crates before distillation in copper stills heated with local firewood, and the gin comes off the still at its bottling strength without dilution.

Why we carry them

This is a gin with a real sense of place, built on wine spirit and a long island tradition. We like it in a pomada, the Menorcan mix with lemon soda, or a simple gin and tonic.
