Their story
The name goes back to 1882, when William Scheffler registered a distillery at the Edge Hill estate in St. Helena. It was the 209th distillery registered with the federal government, and "Registered Distillery No. 209" was painted over the door.
When Leslie Rudd bought Edge Hill in 1999, he found that faded lettering on the old building and set out to revive it. The historic site was not practical for modern production, so the new distillery was built on Pier 50 on the San Francisco waterfront, and No. 209 Gin launched in 2005. Distiller Arne Hillesland, a former Silicon Valley tech worker with no distilling background, worked out the recipe through small test batches.
How it's made
Each botanical was tested and distilled separately while the recipe was developed. The gin is made in a tall copper pot still from Forsyth of Scotland, heated by a steam jacket.
Why we carry them
No. 209 is a San Francisco gin made right on our own waterfront. We like it for a bright, citrusy martini.
