Their story
The Bouchaud family has grown grapes in Saint-Fiacre-sur-Maine, in the heart of Muscadet country near Nantes, since 1850, and the domaine itself dates to 1920. The winery sits right beside the family home.
Pierre-Luc Bouchaud came back after university in 1987 and soon took over from his father. Over about two decades he grew the vineyards from 11 to 20 hectares, and he has been converting the estate to organic farming.
How it's made
Vines grow mostly on schist, with a granite parcel called Pont Caffino in the Château-Thébaud cru. The soils are plowed and fed with organic compost, and the wines ferment in cement and stainless steel tanks before aging on their lees in underground tanks, in some cases for about 30 months.
Why we carry them
Bouchaud's Muscadet is crisp and mineral, exactly what we want with oysters. Their longer-aged cru bottlings show how much depth this region can offer.
