Their story
Domaine de Joÿ sits in Panjas, in the Bas-Armagnac country of the Gers. Today it is run by Vanessa and Kévin Gessler, the fourth generation of a Swiss family that fell for this corner of Gascony and stayed.
The story begins with Paul and Marguerite Gessler, who first moved onto the property. It passed to André and Véronique Gessler, then to their son Olivier, and the vineyard has grown to about 190 hectares.
The family committed to sustainable farming in 2005 and earned France's High Environmental Value (HVE) Level 3 certification in 2019.
How it's made
Most of the vines go to Côtes de Gascogne whites, rosés and reds from Colombard, Ugni Blanc, Gros Manseng, Merlot, Tannat and others, picked from September into mid-October, fermented cool and rested on fine lees. About a tenth of the vineyard, planted to Ugni Blanc, Baco and Folle Blanche, is kept for Armagnac, which is distilled on the estate in a traditional still and aged in local oak.
Why we carry them
We like Joÿ for its range: bright Gascon whites for a weeknight and vintage Armagnacs that make a thoughtful gift.
