Their story
Domaine Zafeirakis is in Tyrnavos, in Thessaly, in the foothills of Mount Olympus. The Zafeirakis family has grown grapes here for more than a century, and Christos Zafeirakis is the fourth generation to make wine.
Christos earned a master's in oenology at the University of Milan and worked in Tuscany, Piedmont and Alto Adige before coming home. In 2005 he planted what is described as the first organic vineyard in the area, and in 2012 he established the domaine.
He is best known for reviving Limniona, a local red grape that had nearly disappeared after phylloxera swept through the region.
How it's made
The family farms about 8 hectares organically on clay soils rich in flint. Alongside Limniona, the estate grows Greek varieties such as Malagousia and Assyrtiko. Christos keeps cellar work simple and avoids added enzymes.
Why we carry them
We think the Limniona is a great introduction to Greek reds: fresh, peppery and unlike anything else on the shelf.
