Their story
ECOS started in a Chicago garage in 1967, when chemist Van Vlahakis set out to make cleaning products that were safer for people and the planet. Vlahakis had come to New York from Greece in 1953 with very little money, and the company he built, first known as Earth Friendly Products, became one of the early names in green cleaning.
The business moved west over the decades, opening a Huntington Beach plant in 1977 and later sites in New Jersey and Washington. After Van's death, his daughter Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks became President and CEO in 2014. The company is now based in Cypress, California, and its laundry detergent has been the flagship since 1990.
How it's made
ECOS makes its own products in company-run facilities in the US. The company reports carbon neutral operations since 2013, water neutral since 2016, and TRUE Platinum Zero Waste certification, and the EPA named it a Safer Choice Partner of the Year in 2020.
