Their story
Eda Rhyne is a small distillery in Asheville, North Carolina, run by Rett Murphy, an organic farmer, and Chris Bower, a forager, herbalist and Asheville bar owner. Neither had made spirits before. They opened in 2018 with the idea of making Italian-style amari from the plants that grow around them in the Blue Ridge.
The lineup includes Appalachian Fernet, Amaro Flora, Amaro Oscura and a woodland aperitivo. In 2024 Hurricane Helene flooded their Biltmore Village distillery just after they had doubled production, spilling about 1,000 gallons of spirit. Their Weaverville location kept operating, and the owners committed to reopening.
How it's made
Bower builds recipes from family recipes and regional folk medicine, foraging in the mountains and on Murphy's farm and buying raw botanicals from local growers. Roots, barks, flowers and leaves are macerated in a house-made corn spirit to pull out flavor, then blended into each bittersweet liqueur.
We are trying to capture our regional terroir. When you taste our amari, it should not taste like any other.
Why we carry them
We think Eda Rhyne makes a strong case that great amaro can come from American hills. Try the Appalachian Fernet after dinner or in a stirred cocktail.
