Their story

El Silencio was started by Fausto Zapata, a Mexico City native who had worked in finance and real estate. The idea grew out of a charity mezcal tasting he helped organize for a children's hospital in Los Angeles, and he later built the brand with partner Vicente Cisneros.

The mezcal is made in San Baltazar Guelavila, Oaxaca, with master mezcalero Pedro Hernandez, who comes from a family of mezcal makers. It launched in Los Angeles in 2013 and quickly found a place behind the city's cocktail bars.

How it's made

El Silencio is 100% agave, made from plants grown for 10 to 12 years. The hearts are roasted in earthen pits, crushed and double distilled, and the original release blends three agave species.

Mezcal is to tequila what single malt is to whisky.

Why we carry them

We like El Silencio as a mezcal built for mixing. Swap it for gin in a Negroni to see why bartenders took to it.
