Their story
Envinate is the work of four friends who met while studying enology: Roberto Santana, Laura Ramos, Alfonso Torrente and José Martínez. Rather than settle in one place, they chose to work in the home regions of the group, from the slate slopes of Ribeira Sacra in Galicia to the volcanic soils of Tenerife and the chalk of Almansa.
The project took shape in 2008, when the four bought a small plot of old-vine Mencía in Ribeira Sacra. Since then they have built a winery in each region and partnered with dozens of local growers, many of them farming tiny, steep parcels that might otherwise be abandoned.
They call their style "vinos Atlánticos," wines shaped by coastal sites, old native varieties and a lot of time spent in the vineyard. The founders travel constantly between regions to check on vines and cellars.
How it's made
Fruit comes from vineyards they own, rent or farm with roughly 60 growers, with a focus on old vines and indigenous grapes. On the steepest Canary Island sites the work is done by hand or with horses. Fermentations use native yeast, aging happens in neutral oak or concrete, and sulfur is added sparingly and only when needed.
It's important to be in these vineyards every day, talking with the grower or working ourselves.
Why we carry them
We love how clearly Envinate's wines speak of their places, whether it's volcanic Tenerife or the slate of Ribeira Sacra. Try two side by side and you'll taste just how different Spain can be.
