Their story

Etienne Bécheras owns and farms Le Prieuré d'Arras, a 12-hectare property in the village of Arras-sur-Rhône in the northern Rhône. Only about four hectares are vines. The rest is forest and flat riverside land planted with cherry and apricot trees.

His vineyards climb steep terraces held up by hand-built stone walls in Arras and Vion, within the Saint-Joseph appellation. He also tends a small plot in Mercurol for Crozes-Hermitage.

How it's made

The vines are farmed organically, and on these steep terraces nearly all of the work is done by hand. Most of the vineyard is Syrah, with a small parcel of Marsanne and Roussanne that yields just a few barrels of white each year.

Why we carry them

We love finding small growers like Etienne in the northern Rhône. His Saint-Joseph has the peppery, savory Syrah character we look for, made in tiny quantities.
