Their story
Far North Spirits sits on Mike Swanson's family farm near Hallock, in the Red River Valley of northwest Minnesota. Swanson and his wife, Cheri Reese, left marketing and public relations jobs in the Twin Cities to start the distillery, which began production in 2013.
The farm already grew grain and sugar beets, and its rye became the base for the first spirit, a gin. Whiskey and rum followed. The distillery bills itself as the northernmost in the contiguous United States.
How it's made
Rye grown on the family farm is cooked, fermented and distilled on site in copper stills, so the grain never leaves the property before it becomes spirit. The whiskey is aged in barrels before bottling, while the rum uses sugar cane brought in from Louisiana.
Why we carry them
We love a distillery that grows its own grain, and Far North shows what that rye can do. Try the gin in a classic martini.
