Their story

Fidencio is named for Fidencio Jiménez, who moved to Santiago Matatlán in Oaxaca more than a century ago and began making mezcal with clay pots and river reeds. His son and grandson carried the work forward, adding copper stills in the 1930s and oak barrels in the 1940s, and later buying land to grow their own agave.

In 2006 his great-grandson Enrique Jiménez, who studied chemical engineering before coming home to the family trade, founded the Fábrica de Mezcal del Amigo, where Fidencio is made today. The brand is a partnership between the Jiménez family and its U.S. importer.

How it's made

The family farms much of its espadín agave on its own land, using biodynamic methods. Most expressions are roasted and distilled in the traditional Oaxacan way, but the distillery also built a radiant heat oven, the first of its kind in Oaxaca, to make Fidencio Único, an unsmoked mezcal. The range includes tepextate, madrecuixe, tobalá and pechuga bottlings.

Why we carry them

Fidencio Único is a great bottle for anyone who thinks they do not like smoky mezcal. Pour it next to the Clásico and taste how much the oven changes the agave.
