Their story
Fontana Formiello is a pantry brand from Coppola Foods, an Italian family food company that works between London and Mercato San Severino, near Salerno in Campania. The name comes from the place where it all began: in 1903, Gerardo Coppola opened a small food trading business in Fontana Formiello, a corner of Mercato San Severino.
His son Ernesto took over in 1936 and widened the trade to pasta, grains and beans, then opened a cannery in 1952 to put up the San Marzano tomatoes grown around the town. In 2012 a new generation set up Coppola Foods in London to bring the family's products to more of the world, and Fontana Formiello became its gastronomy line.
The company is listed in Italy's registry of historic businesses, a recognition for firms that have operated for more than a century.
How it's made
The range draws on Italian producers for pasta, grains and other pantry goods, packaged under the family name of the original shop. Its organic fusilli and its fregula, the toasted Sardinian pasta pearls, have both earned one-star Great Taste awards.
Why we carry them
We like Fontana Formiello for the everyday Italian basics, the kind of pasta and grains you reach for on a weeknight. Try the fregula in a brothy soup or tossed with clams.
