Their story
Fontodi belongs to the Manetti family, who have lived and worked in Chianti for about three centuries, first as makers of terracotta. In 1968 they bought the Fontodi estate in Panzano and turned to wine. Today Giovanni Manetti runs it with his cousin Marco.
The land itself has a long history. Vines grew here in Roman times, and winemaking on the estate is recorded back to the 1500s. The vineyards sit in the Conca d'Oro, the "golden shell," a sunny amphitheater of slopes just south of the village.
The estate is best known for its Chianti Classico and for Flaccianello della Pieve, a pure Sangiovese that has become one of Tuscany's benchmark reds.
How it's made
The family farms about 70 hectares organically. Wines ferment in temperature-controlled steel tanks and move by gravity rather than pumps down to the barrel cellar, where they age in French oak, new barrels for the top bottlings and older ones for the rest.
Why we carry them
Fontodi's Chianti Classico is one of our go-to reds for a bowl of pasta or a grilled steak. If you want to see what Sangiovese can do with time, Flaccianello is worth the splurge.
