Their story

Four Roses is made in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, at a Spanish Mission-style distillery built in 1910 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The company credits Paul Jones Jr., who trademarked the Four Roses name in 1888, as its founder.

Seagram bought the brand in 1943, and for decades it was best known as a blended whiskey in the U.S. Japan's Kirin bought Four Roses in 2002, dropped the blend and put the focus back on straight bourbon. Longtime master distiller Jim Rutledge led production from 1995 to 2015 and was followed by Brent Elliott.

How it's made

Four Roses uses two mashbills and five house yeast strains to make ten separate bourbon recipes. The flagship bourbon blends them together, while single barrel bottlings show off one recipe at a time. The whiskey is aged and bottled at the company's warehouse site in Cox's Creek.

Why we carry them

Four Roses is a great way to learn how much yeast and grain shape a bourbon. Try the Small Batch next to a Single Barrel and taste the difference.
