Their story
François Voyer is a Cognac house run by the Chauchet-Voyer family, who have grown vines in the Grande Champagne cru for five generations, going back to around the time of the French Revolution. Their vineyards lie in the villages of Verrières and Ambleville in the Charente.
Cellar master Pierre Vaudon tastes every lot each year and chooses which eaux-de-vie go into the blends. The house now makes about ten Cognacs, along with white and red Pineau des Charentes, and ships to more than 30 countries.
How it's made
The family farms 28 hectares of Ugni Blanc with minimal chemical inputs and, unusually, distills its own wine on the lees in two Charentais stills. Young spirits spend about three years in new Limousin oak before moving to older barrels, and the distillers make the cuts by taste rather than by machine.
Why we carry them
Voyer is the kind of Cognac we love to show people who only know the big houses. It is grower-made, rich and clean, and the XO is a real treat.
