Their story
Gaba do Xil is the Valdeorras label of Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez, the company Telmo Rodríguez and Pablo Eguzkiza started in 1994 with a Garnacha from old bush vines in Navarra. Their aim was to make wines across many Spanish regions, and the original company name made that intent clear.
In Valdeorras, in inland Galicia, they work steep, terraced plots around Larouco and Santa Cruz in Ourense, using their own vineyards and grapes from longtime local growers.
How it's made
The Godello grows on poor, shallow soils of red clay, slate and granite at around 400 to 550 meters. Grapes are hand-picked and fermented in stainless steel, mostly with native yeasts, then rested on the lees for about four months. The team picks early to keep the wine fresh.
Why we carry them
We think this is one of the best introductions to Godello on our shelves. It is crisp, lightly herbal and great with seafood.
