Their story
Gabriëlskloof is a family-owned farm just outside the village of Bot River, in South Africa's Walker Bay region near the southern Cape coast. South African businessman Bernhard Heyns founded it in 2001, with help from local farmer Barry Anderson in finding the site.
The wines are made by Peter-Allan Finlayson, son of Walker Bay pioneer Peter Finlayson, who also makes wine under his own Crystallum label. Under his hand the estate has built a range of site-driven bottlings, including Syrah from shale and sandstone soils.
How it's made
All vineyard work is done by hand, and the estate farms with sustainability and local biodiversity in mind. The lean soils keep yields low. In the cellar Finlayson keeps intervention to a minimum, aiming to capture the sunshine and cool Atlantic breezes of Walker Bay.
Why we carry them
We like Gabriëlskloof for showing how fresh and precise South African wine can be. The Syrah bottlings are a fun way to taste how soil shapes a wine.
