Their story
Gary Farrell moved to Sonoma County in the 1970s and learned winemaking alongside local names like Joe Rochioli, Davis Bynum and Tom Dehlinger. He became head winemaker at Davis Bynum in 1978 and released the first wine under his own name in 1982, a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir from the Rochioli Vineyard.
In 1998 he built a hilltop winery near Healdsburg. He sold the brand and winery to Allied Domecq in 2004, and it has changed hands several times since, including a period under the Vincraft Group led by Bill Price, Walt Klenz and Pete Scott. The winery keeps its focus on the Russian River Valley.
How it's made
Gary Farrell specializes in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, sourcing from well-known Russian River Valley vineyards that have included Rochioli. The wines are made at the hilltop winery near Healdsburg with an eye toward showing each vineyard's character.
Why we carry them
We think Gary Farrell is a reliable way to taste classic Russian River Pinot Noir. It is a good bottle to bring to a dinner when you want something polished.
