Their story

Campbeltown, at the tip of the Kintyre peninsula, once had dozens of distilleries. William Mitchell founded Glengyle there in 1872 after a family falling-out at nearby Springbank. Like most of the town's distilleries, it fell to the economic slump after World War I and stopped producing in 1925.

In 2000, Hedley Wright, a Mitchell descendant who also heads Springbank, formed Mitchell's Glengyle Ltd to bring it back, and spirit began flowing again in 2004. Because another company owns the Glengyle brand name, the whisky is sold as Kilkerran, after the old Gaelic name for the settlement where Campbeltown stands.

How it's made

The rebuilt distillery was fitted with stills, mills, a mash tun and washbacks, much of it salvaged from distilleries that had closed or had surplus equipment. It operates under the same family leadership as Springbank, in one of Scotland's smallest whisky regions.

Why we carry them

Kilkerran is a whisky-lover's whisky, coastal and characterful. We like that buying a bottle supports the revival of Campbeltown distilling.
