Their story

Glenmorangie stands on the shore of the Dornoch Firth at Tain, in the northern Highlands. There was brewing on Morangie Farm long before whisky, but in 1843 William Matheson bought the farm, turned its brewery into a distillery and gave it the Glenmorangie name.

The Edinburgh firm Macdonald & Muir bought it in 1918, and the Macdonald family ran it for close to 90 years. In 2004 it was sold to LVMH, the French luxury group, which still owns it. Dr. Bill Lumsden has led whisky creation there for more than two decades, and a small team long known as the Sixteen Men of Tain runs the stills.

How it's made

The spirit stills, at about 26 feet, are the tallest in Scotland and give a light, delicate spirit. Water comes from the Tarlogie Springs in the hills above the distillery. Casks are made from American white oak, lent first to bourbon makers, and some whiskies are later finished in casks that held wine, port or sherry.

Why we carry them

Glenmorangie is one of the friendliest single malts we know, bright and fruity rather than heavy. The cask-finished bottlings are a fun way to explore how wood shapes whisky.
