Ground Breaker Brewing
A dedicated gluten-free brewery in Oregon making beer from sorghum, lentils, and chestnuts.
- Founded by
- James Neumeister
- Based in
- Portland, Oregon
Their story
Ground Breaker was started by James Neumeister, a trained machinist who saw a gluten-free brewery as a way to make a job out of making people happy. The brewery is based in Portland, Oregon, and brews only gluten-free beer.
Neumeister learned early that almost any starchy ingredient can be brewed, and he spent years working out how to make sorghum taste clean and balanced. The result is a lineup of ales that holds its own next to conventional craft beer.
How it's made
Sorghum is the main fermentable, with lentils and chestnuts roasted in-house in a drum roaster to stand in for specialty malts. Neumeister developed his own mash schedule and adds a custom yeast nutrient blend so fermentation stays clean.
If it has starch and doesn't have oil, you can use it to make beer.
Why we carry them
For shoppers who avoid gluten, Ground Breaker is the brewery we suggest first, because the beer stands on its own rather than as a substitute.
