Durango mezcal from a historic hacienda, made mainly from Cenizo agave.

Hacienda Dolores, Durango

Their story

Hacienda Dolores is a mezcal producer in Mezquital, near Durango City in northern Mexico. The project grew out of the Gutiérrez family, and production and bottling take place at the historic Hacienda Dolores on Rancho La Campana de Santa Elena.

Its mezcals are sold under the Lágrimas de Dolores name, with bottlings of Cenizo, Castilla, and Masparillo agaves. The family replants agave to keep the local supply healthy.

How it's made

Agave hearts, mostly Agave durangensis, known locally as Cenizo, are roasted in underground pit ovens. They ferment with wild yeasts in pine vats and are distilled twice in copper and steel pot stills. Most bottlings are unaged joven, with some añejos rested in white oak.

Why we carry them

Durango mezcal is less known than Oaxaca's, and Hacienda Dolores is a good way to taste the difference.
