Their story
Hemingway Whiskey Company brings together three families: the Groths, the Calls and the Hemingways. Steve Groth, a co-founder of Angel's Envy, leads the company, and father and sons Ron, Jacob and Clayton Call handle the whiskey. Ernest Hemingway's family took part in shaping the brand.
The brand's home is Jacob Call's Western Kentucky Distilling Co. in Beaver Dam, Kentucky. Its first release, a rye whiskey, came out in November 2022 in a small run of numbered bottles and sold out within a week. A blend of Kentucky straight bourbons followed. The company sits under Old Man and the Sea Brands, which also makes Papa's Pilar rum.
How it's made
The Calls source, blend and finish the whiskey by hand. The First Edition rye blends mostly 9-year-old Indiana straight rye with a smaller share of 4-year-old Kentucky rye that Jacob Call distilled. It is then finished in Oloroso sherry casks that previously held rum and bottled at 100 proof.
It's been an honor to work with my father and brother on Hemingway Rye Whiskey.
Why we carry them
We like that real distillers, not just a famous name, are behind these bottles. The sherry and rum cask finish makes the rye a good pick for a slow evening pour.
