Their story

Highland Park sits on the road between Kirkwall, the main town of the Orkney Islands, and the village of Holm, off Scotland's northern tip. The distillery takes its name from the High Park spring, which still provides its water.

It was founded in 1798 and has been making whisky on the same site for more than two centuries. Today it is owned by the Edrington Group, which also owns The Macallan.

How it's made

Highland Park still malts part of its barley by hand on traditional malting floors, around a quarter of what it uses. The malt is dried over Orkney peat, which is made mostly of heather rather than wood or roots, so the smoke is softer and more floral than many island whiskies. The spirit is then aged in oak casks.

Why we carry them

We point people to Highland Park when they want smoke without a heavy hit. The 12 year old is a good bottle to learn what Orkney peat tastes like.
