Their story
Hikari Shuzo is a distillery in Kasuya, a district just east of Fukuoka city on the island of Kyushu. Kyushu is the heartland of shochu, Japan's native distilled spirit, and Hikari Shuzo is part of that tradition.
The distillery welcomes visitors for guided tours of its production area and tastings. Beyond shochu, its spirits include whisky bottled under the Hakata name, after Fukuoka's historic port district.
How it's made
Hikari Shuzo makes shochu from regional ingredients such as sweet potato and barley, using distilling methods handed down over generations. Some of its whiskies are aged in sherry casks, such as the Hakata 10 year old.
Why we carry them
We like bringing in spirits from Kyushu that you do not often see in the U.S. Try the barley shochu on the rocks, or the Hakata whisky if you like a sherry cask.
