Hochstadters Slow & Low
A bottled rock and rye built on 6-year-old straight rye.
- Founded by
- Robert Cooper (Cooper Spirits)
Their story
Hochstadter's Slow & Low comes from Cooper Spirits and Robert Cooper, the spirits maker also known for St-Germain. Cooper's grandfather made a similar rock and rye, and the brand is named after the original 19th-century Hochstadter's Rock and Rye.
Rock and rye is an old American style: a whiskey-based liqueur flavored with citrus and named for its rye base and the rock candy syrup used to sweeten it. Slow & Low brings the style back in a modern bottle, made in Philadelphia.
How it's made
The base is a 6-year-old straight rye whiskey. It is steeped with lemon, grapefruit and orange peels, cane sugar, honey and horehound, then bottled at 98 proof. It drinks like a ready-made Old Fashioned.
Why we carry them
We like having a cocktail that needs only a glass and some ice. Pour Slow & Low over a big cube with an orange peel.
