Their story

India Tree works out of a dockside headquarters in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood. Founder Gretchen Goehrend started the company in 1990 and named it after her mother's Spode china pattern.

The pantry line covers baking sugars from Mauritius, salts from around the world, peppercorns, chiles and popcorn. Bakers know India Tree best for its Nature's Colors sugars, sprinkles and icing colors, made without artificial dyes. In 2012 Bon Appétit named its Tellicherry peppercorns a pantry staple.

How it's made

Goehrend selects spices by plant variety and growing region, and pays attention to how they are ripened, picked, dried and stored. The Nature's Colors line uses vegetable-based colorants in place of synthetic dyes.

We are thrilled to be the recipients of this unsolicited honor.

Why we carry them

We like India Tree for holiday baking, when decorating sugars without artificial dyes matter. The Tellicherry pepper earns a spot by the stove year-round.
