Their story

Bodega Javier Sanz Viticultor is a family winery in La Seca, in the heart of Spain's Rueda region. It was founded in the late 1800s by Agustín Nanclares, the great-grandfather of today's owner, Javier Sanz, and is now run by the fifth generation.

The family tends one of the oldest working vineyards in the Rueda appellation, Pago de Saltamontes, a small pre-phylloxera plot registered in 1863. They have also worked to bring back nearly lost local grapes such as Malcorta, nicknamed Cenicienta, or Cinderella. Visitors taste the wines inside a restored 18th-century church.

How it's made

Verdejo, Rueda's native white grape, is the backbone of the range, alongside Sauvignon Blanc and rare local varieties. The family manages both vineyard and cellar, making dry whites, reds and sweet wines from its own vines.

Why we carry them

We like Javier Sanz Verdejo as a crisp, herbal white that punches above its price. It is also a nice way to taste a bit of Rueda history.
